THE QUESTION LIBRARY THE UNIVERSE

Is nature perfectly fair between matter and antimatter?

How matter and antimatter differ in some decays, what quarks have to do with it, and why hydrogen–antihydrogen spectroscopy tests a different symmetry.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Not in every interaction: CP symmetry is violated in some particle decays. But symmetry is a precise comparison, not a judgment about fairness. Other tests compare the properties of hydrogen and antihydrogen and find agreement within their precision. These results address different transformations. Neither an observed decay asymmetry nor an agreeing atomic spectrum, by itself, explains why matter dominates the universe.

  • CP violation concerns specified particle processes.
  • Atomic spectra test CPT-related predictions, including time reversal.
  • Agreement within precision is not proof of exact equality at every possible scale.

WHAT WE DON’T KNOW YET

The complete connection between measured symmetry properties and the cosmic matter surplus remains unknown.

WHAT WOULD CHANGE THIS ANSWER

Reproducible spectral differences beyond uncertainty, or new decay asymmetries inconsistent with well-tested predictions and surviving independent checks.

What does mirror twin mean?

CP combines replacing particles with antiparticles and reversing spatial coordinates. Different probabilities for corresponding processes violate this symmetry. A specified difference is not a universal preference in every interaction. LHCb's original symmetry analysis.

This distinction matters whenever someone calls two objects identical or different. We need to name the property and the conditions of comparison. Matching one property does not require every transformation to behave identically. Likewise, a difference in one process cannot be expanded into a claim that all antimatter properties differ.

What did the baryon experiment show?

LHCb's 2025 paper established CP violation in a specific beauty-lambda baryon decay compared with its antibaryon counterpart. It did not establish a new force or a complete explanation of the cosmic surplus.

Why do quarks matter?

Quarks are fundamental constituents of protons and neutrons, bound through gluon interactions. Those composite particles form atomic nuclei. There are six quark types, called flavors. The quark sector therefore connects the familiar matter around us to the particle processes tested in laboratories. DOE explains the distinction between these ingredients and the larger particles they form. DOE: quarks and gluons.

The symmetry puzzle is not answered by merely listing constituents. Knowing which parts a system contains is a starting point for asking what interactions do. Researchers then compare corresponding processes, accounting for experimental conditions and uncertainty.

How are hydrogen and antihydrogen compared?

Hydrogen contains a proton and electron; antihydrogen contains their antiparticles, an antiproton and positron. ALPHA produces and magnetically traps anti-atoms, then uses radiation to probe transitions between energy states. Spectroscopy compares the transition frequencies with hydrogen. The collaboration's 2018 account describes how optical and microwave transitions can be detected when anti-atoms leave the trap and annihilate. ALPHA's experimental account.

A May 2026 original ALPHA measurement determined the ground-state hyperfine splitting to four parts per million and found it consistent with hydrogen expectations. It tests a particular spectral property at finite precision, not exact equality beyond all possible measurements. Original hyperfine measurement.

Why is this not a contradiction?

CPT adds time reversal to charge conjugation and parity. The ALPHA paper describes spectral comparisons as tests of that combined symmetry. Testing CPT-related spectral agreement is a different question from observing CP-violating decay rates. Confidence is high in those reported results; their ultimate connection to the cosmic surplus remains unresolved. A reproducible spectral mismatch beyond uncertainties or additional well-established decay evidence would change the relevant tests. See antimatter basics and the separate matter-surplus puzzle.
