The UniverseAnswer
Why do physicists still call the matter-antimatter imbalance unsolved?
Why the matter surplus remains unexplained, what Sakharov's conditions require, and how sphalerons and proposed neutrino mechanisms might connect.
THE QUESTION LIBRARY THE UNIVERSE
Could dark matter have several particles and hidden forces? Learn what the abundance ratio, dark photons and early-universe element tests actually tell us.
A complicated hidden sector is possible, but evidence has not supplied a confirmed inventory. The central task is to connect a proposed explanation to measurable effects. A successful theory must account for the observed abundance and survive laboratory and early-universe tests; an attractive analogy with familiar matter is not enough.
WHAT WE DON’T KNOW YET
The number and properties of dark particles and any new forces remain unknown. An abundance ratio does not identify a mechanism.
WHAT WOULD CHANGE THIS ANSWER
An independently confirmed new particle or interaction whose predicted abundance and early-universe effects also agree with measurements.

A total amount does not identify its ingredients. Knowing a sealed box's weight would not tell you how many kinds of objects it contains. Likewise, evidence for a dark component does not by itself decide whether it is one species or several. A more complicated explanation has to match observations at least as well as a simpler one.
CERN's NA64 experiment searches a hypothetical dark sector: particles that might constitute dark matter or carry a new interaction between it and visible matter. This makes multiple particles and forces a research possibility. It does not establish hidden atoms, planets or life. NA64's official description.
The Planck analysis inferred a cold-dark-matter density about 5.4 times the ordinary, baryonic density under its cosmological model. This is a mass-density ratio, not five dark particles for every ordinary particle. Different particle masses would change the number ratio. Original Planck cosmological-parameter analysis.
Kaplan, Luty and Zurek's 2009 asymmetric-dark-matter models illustrate a possible connection: early interactions transfer an imbalance related to ordinary matter into the dark component. That links the two abundances under specified assumptions. It is an example of treating the ratio as a clue, not proof that this recipe describes our universe. Original asymmetric-dark-matter proposal.
A number alone cannot choose between explanations. The useful next question is what else each explanation predicts. Two models might match the ratio while disagreeing about a laboratory signal. Such a difference gives researchers a way to compare them beyond the original coincidence.
A dark photon is a proposed force-carrier particle. The name draws an analogy with the ordinary photon; it does not mean that telescopes have photographed a second kind of light. NA64 looks for possible decay products or missing collision energy. Missing energy must be distinguished from known processes and detector effects before it can support a new particle.
Light-element formation, called Big Bang nucleosynthesis, provides another test. New particles can change the expansion rate or ordinary-particle temperatures, changing predicted element abundances. Giovanetti and colleagues combined helium and deuterium information with the cosmic microwave background to constrain a specified light-dark-matter model with a massive dark photon. Their exclusions apply to that setup, not every possible dark sector. Original joint early-universe analysis.
Confidence is high that these observations constrain models; the hidden particle inventory remains unknown. A confirmed particle signal with compatible cosmological predictions could change that. Start with the evidence for dark matter; this answer addresses its possible complexity rather than repeating those basics.
